Frostpunk 2 Outposts & Settlements Guide
Outposts are the lightweight backbone of Frostland resource extraction. While colonies require full settlement infrastructure, outposts provide efficient single-tile resource gathering with minimal investment. Understanding when to build outposts versus investing in full colonies, and how to connect outposts to your transfer network, is essential for sustaining New London's growing economy.
Outpost Types and Resources
Outposts can be established on tiles containing material deposits, food sources, oil reserves, and specialized resources unlocked through exploration. Each outpost type extracts its tile resource at a fixed rate determined by deposit quality and any applicable research bonuses. Material outposts feed construction and maintenance needs. Food outposts supplement Hothouse and Food District production. Oil outposts supply fuel for generators and the Old Dreadnought colony.
Before building, evaluate deposit quality icons on the Frostland map. High-yield deposits deserve immediate outpost construction and trail connections. Low-yield deposits may not justify the team assignment and trail maintenance cost unless no better options exist nearby. Use the materials overlay from our economy overlays guide to identify city-side shortages that outposts should address.
Establishing Settlements
Settlements occupy a middle ground between outposts and full colonies. Some Frostland locations discovered during exploration can be upgraded from outposts to settlements with basic infrastructure: shelter, storage, and a small workforce contingent. Settlements extract resources more efficiently than outposts and can serve as trail network hubs for deeper Frostland sites.
Settlement upgrades require Frostland Teams to construct over multiple phases and consume materials shipped from New London. Plan material stockpiles before committing to settlement upgrades, especially when simultaneously expanding colony infrastructure. Settlements near colony sites like the Old Dreadnought often evolve into colony support bases automatically during the campaign.
Connecting Outposts to New London
An outpost without a transfer route is a stranded investment. After constructing an outpost, immediately assign a Frostland Team to build a trail connecting it to New London or the nearest skyway hub. Trails have a 250-unit capacity per transfer cycle, sufficient for one or two outposts on a single route. When capacity becomes insufficient, research skyways for 900-unit transfer capacity.
Route planning matters: shorter trails reduce transfer time and team construction commitment. Hub-and-spoke networks with skyway nodes at central locations serve multiple outposts more efficiently than long chains of individual trails. Our resource transfer guide provides detailed capacity calculations and network design patterns.
Outpost Maintenance and Team Assignment
Most outposts operate passively after construction, but some deposit types and narrative events require active team maintenance. Monitor outpost status icons on the Frostland map for warnings about depleted deposits, storm damage, or event triggers. Reassign teams from completed exploration tasks to maintenance roles before launching new expeditions.
During whiteout events, outpost production may slow or pause depending on storm severity. This is normal and does not indicate a problem with your network. Focus on maintaining heat in New London and colonies first, then restore outpost operations once conditions stabilize. See our exploration guide for team capacity planning during crises.
Outpost Strategy by Game Phase
Early game: build outposts on the nearest material and food deposits within three to five tiles of New London. Connect with basic trails and prioritize deposits that address your most immediate shortages. Mid game: expand outpost networks toward colony sites and high-value oil deposits. Upgrade key locations to settlements and begin skyway research for capacity scaling.
Late game: outposts supplement colony production rather than replacing it. Colonies like Old Dreadnought and Winterhome should have their own extraction infrastructure, with outposts filling gaps in the resource pipeline. In Utopia Builder, maintain eight to twelve active outposts across the map for a balanced economy supporting ambitious late-game district configurations. Consult our map guide for deposit distribution on specific layouts.
When abandoning depleted outposts, salvage any remaining stockpile through a final transfer run before dismantling the site. Even small material caches help fund trail construction to replacement deposits. Avoid maintaining outposts on exhausted tiles unless the location serves as a trail junction hub for routing resources from deeper sites back toward New London.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I build an outpost?
Send a Frostland Team to a tile with a resource deposit. Select the outpost construction option and confirm. The team builds the outpost over several in-game days, after which it automatically extracts resources from the tile.
Do outposts need heat or workforce?
Outposts do not require district-level heat allocation or workforce. They operate autonomously once constructed, though they need an active Frostland Team assigned for maintenance on some deposit types.
How many outposts should I maintain?
Maintain outposts on every high-value deposit within trail range of New London or a colony. Typically four to eight outposts support a mid-game economy without overextending team capacity.
Can outposts be destroyed or abandoned?
You can abandon outposts to free team capacity for new sites. Abandoned outposts stop producing resources but leave the deposit available for future re-establishment.
