Frostpunk 2 Map Tier List
Map selection determines terrain constraints, resource availability, Frostland opportunity, and heat management difficulty before you frostbreak a single tile. This tier list ranks all eight Utopia Builder maps for general-purpose accessibility on Officer difficulty. Rankings shift with difficulty setting and faction pairing from our faction tier list.
For detailed per-map resource profiles, expansion routes, and recommended factions, read our all maps guide. For session setup including ambitions and difficulty, see the Utopia Builder guide.
S-Tier: Broken Shore
Broken Shore earns S-tier as the most versatile Utopia Builder map. Coastal geography provides extensive Frostland access with numerous outpost and expedition sites, making it ideal for Venturer trade strategies and exploration ambitions. Resource deposits distribute evenly across the main city area and Frostland periphery, reducing the risk of resource dead zones that force expensive district relocation.
Wind exposure remains moderate compared to Windswept Peaks, and crevasse features appear frequently enough to support zero-heat housing experiments without the spatial constraints of Hanging Rock. Broken Shore supports every faction tier effectively: Overseers generalize well, Venturers exploit trade routes, Icebloods handle occasional cold snaps, and Technocrats benefit from balanced expansion pacing. Recommended for first Utopia Builder sessions after completing the story campaign prologue.
A-Tier: Crater and Fractured Gorge
Crater (A) — A sheltered bowl map with concentrated fertile soil deposits and protected generator placement options. Crater forgives inefficient heat management thanks to natural wind shelter, making it excellent for learning district adjacency on Citizen and Officer difficulty. Expansion space is adequate though less generous than Broken Shore. Pair with Overseers or Technocrats for research-focused runs.
Fractured Gorge (A) — Elevation changes create natural district zones separated by gorge terrain, encouraging deliberate industrial-residential separation that prevents squalor penalties. Geothermal deposits support Deep Geothermal Plant construction for advanced heat management. Fractured Gorge rewards players who understand adjacency from our adjacency guide and punishes careless industrial placement less than open maps because gorges provide natural buffers.
B-Tier: Horizon, Hanging Rock, and Dreadnought
Horizon (B) — Open plains with balanced resources and moderate challenge. Beginner-friendly on Citizen difficulty but lacks the Frostland depth and terrain features that elevate Broken Shore. Excellent for learning core mechanics without map-specific advantages or penalties.
Hanging Rock (B) — Cliffside map with premium crevasse shelter for zero-heat housing strategies but limited expansion corridors. Icebloods and players pursuing district heat optimization extract maximum value. Timed ambitions struggle due to spatial constraints on rapid district expansion.
Dreadnought (B) — Mobile platform layout with unique construction constraints inspired by the campaign's Old Dreadnought setting. Distinctive gameplay rewards creative district placement but deviates enough from standard maps to require adaptation. Best for experienced players seeking variety rather than optimal win rates.
C-Tier and D-Tier Maps
Windswept Peaks (C) — Extreme wind exposure increases heat demand on exposed districts, demanding aggressive Heating Hub networks and Iceblood faction bonuses. Skilled players complete ambitions here for bragging rights, but the map punishes adjacency mistakes that other layouts forgive. Captain difficulty on Windswept Peaks represents a genuine endgame challenge.
The Pit (D) — Deep basin with intense cold, rich deposits, and limited expansion routes. Heat management dominates every decision from the first frostbreak. Icebloods jump to S-tier faction pairing here, but the map itself remains D-tier for general accessibility because inefficient play fails faster than on any other layout.
Map Tier Summary and Pairing Guide
S-Tier: Broken Shore — Most versatile map for all factions and ambitions.
A-Tier: Crater (sheltered beginner-friendly), Fractured Gorge (adjacency and geothermal).
B-Tier: Horizon (open balanced), Hanging Rock (crevasse shelter, limited space), Dreadnought (unique platform).
C-Tier: Windswept Peaks (extreme wind).
D-Tier: The Pit (intense cold, tight expansion).
Combine map tier with faction tier for optimal sessions: Overseers on Broken Shore at Officer difficulty for learning, Venturers on Broken Shore for trade ambitions, Icebloods on The Pit at Captain for maximum challenge. Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Broken Shore S-tier?
Broken Shore combines moderate wind exposure, coastal Frostland access with extensive outpost sites, balanced resource deposits, and generous expansion space. It forgives inefficient early placement while supporting trade, research, and exploration strategies equally well.
Is Crater better than Fractured Gorge?
Both rank A-tier. Crater offers a sheltered bowl with concentrated fertile soil ideal for food production. Fractured Gorge provides elevation-based district zoning with geothermal deposits. Crater suits beginners slightly better; Fractured Gorge rewards advanced adjacency planning.
Why is Hanging Rock B-tier despite good shelter?
Hanging Rock offers excellent crevasse shelter for zero-heat housing but limits expansion corridors along cliff edges. Players who master adjacency optimization thrive; those expecting open sprawl find the map constraining compared to Horizon or Broken Shore.
Which map is hardest?
The Pit ranks lowest due to deep-basin cold intensity, limited expansion routes, and high heat demand that punishes inefficient generator management. Windswept Peaks ranks similarly for extreme wind exposure that increases district heat demand across exposed tiles.
