Frostpunk 2 Controls Guide

Mastering Frostpunk 2 keyboard controls is essential for efficient city management. As the Steward of New London, you will constantly switch between district construction, research, council sessions, and Frostland expeditions. Knowing the right hotkey at the right moment can mean the difference between surviving a whiteout and watching your generator fail.

Unlike the original Frostpunk where you placed individual buildings, Frostpunk 2 operates at the district level. You frostbreak tiles in batches, construct entire districts at once, and manage heat allocation across multiple zones. This scale shift makes camera control and overlay shortcuts even more important than in the first game.

Core Control Categories

Frostpunk 2 controls fall into four main categories: camera movement, game speed, menu shortcuts, and economy overlays. Camera controls use WASD for panning and Q/E for rotation. Game speed uses number keys 1 through 3, with Space Bar for pause. Menu shortcuts include R for the Idea Tree, C for Council, V for Frostland, N for Buildings, H for Hubs, B for Districts, and X for Frostbreaking.

Construction Controls

District and building placement uses the left mouse button to confirm and the right mouse button to cancel or deselect tiles. Hold Left Shift while clicking to continue placing the same district type across multiple locations. Right-click on a selected district tile to deselect it without canceling the entire construction mode.

The Frostbreaker tool activated with X lets you select up to eight tiles per frostbreaking operation. Each operation costs 200 workforce and 30 heatstamps, so efficient tile selection saves both resources and time. Press Escape to close any open panel and return to the city view.

Save and Load Shortcuts

Quick Save with F5 and Quick Load with F9 provide fast checkpoint management during difficult campaign chapters. The prologue and early chapters punish inefficient play, so saving before major council votes or whiteout events is strongly recommended. Tips for Efficient Stewardship

New players often overlook the bracket keys for cycling between cities and colonies. Left Bracket and Right Bracket switch your view between New London and any established colonies in the Frostland. This becomes critical from Chapter 1 onward when you manage the Old Dreadnought oil colony alongside your main city.

Before diving into the campaign, spend ten minutes in the settings menu reviewing and customizing your keybinds.
